When it’s time…there is help
and some resources to make it easier…
When the inevitable time comes for all of us pet owner and we face the day that our beloved pet is not going to make it through another 24 hours, whether it’s from old age, and they’ve lived a long & lovely life right by your side, or at the event of an accident that takes them from us much too soon, or a sudden illness… our pets, unfortunately, do not live the length of lives that we do in time and space.
It is one of many reasons that we should always strive to give these wonderful creatures as much love as they give us so freely and unconditionally.
When you do go through the loss of a pet, it is very typical to go through the standard stages of grief that are inherent to human behavior. You will feel angry, you will feel sad, you will experience many ranges of emotions… and our only advice is … let yourself feel them all. It is perfectly natural, and there have been studies that show people often feel an even deeper sense of loss with a family pet than they do a relative because often times, they have spent more one on one time with that pet. It’s not hard to imagine.
So in those times of sadness, don’t go through them alone. Turn to your friends, your family, look through pictures, smile, laugh, cry and let it all out. Look at different ways that others have expressed their grief and emotions at the same event, and eventually, you will find your way through the sadness.
For some assistance, here are a few sites online that offer resources in dealing specifically with pet loss grief. You might also check with your local Humane Society because many of them hold monthly or bi-weekly loss sessions in which you can meet and talk with other people who are going through the same things. Trust us, it helps.
